The 2000 Kraszna-Krausz Photography volume Awards awarded a total of [pound]16000 to eight parts on the art, culture, historical, technological and scientific aspects of photography. With a record minute of over 300 books from 17 countries, the awards for the prize-winning parts was extremely competitive. The pair main prizes for Art, improvement & History of [pound]5000 each were awarded to Boris Mikhailov's Case History (Scalo, Switzerland). A collection of photographs from Mikhailov's birthplace of Kharkov, Ukraine, Case History captures the scent of everyday life amid the homelessnes and distress that resulted from the break-up of the former Soviet Union. Unforgiving photographs portray intimate glimpses into the hearts of individuals whose willpower allows them to survive while they are encompassed with the decay of their economy, buildings and individual lives. Sidney F Ray's Scientific Photography and Applied Imaging (Focal Pres UK) received the [pound]5000 main prize in the Craft, Technology and Scientif ic part category. The extensively illustrated and researched part covers the use of photography and images as tools in science, technology and medicine and is aimed at professionals and scientists. The basic theory, techniques, materials, special equipment and applications of photography are largely described. Six other books received special commendations, with each author receiving [pound]1000: Passion, Justice, Freedom: Photographs of Sicily on Letizia Battaglia (Aperture, USA--originating publisher); Ceska Fotograticka Avantgarda 1918-1948 by means of Vladimir Birgus & contributors (Kant, Czech Republic--originating publisher); Ben Shahn's strange York: The Photography of late Times by Deborah Martin Kao, Laura Katzman and Jenna Webster (Yale University Pres USA/UK, in association with the Harvard University Art Museums); cloyed Moon by Michael Light (Jonathan Cape, UK--originating publisher); Irving Penn Regards the Work of Issey Miyake (Jonathan Cape, UK--originating publisher); and Germaine Krull: Photographer of M odernity through Kim Sichel (MIT Press, USA/UK--originating publisher). The 2001 Kraszna-Krausz work Awards will be for works on the moving image (film, television, video and related media), the 2002 awards will again be forward photography books.
